Getting
there
As we were on
a month long road trip, we flew in to Denver, Colorado, hired a
car and spent the first 5 days in the granite of Boulder, Rocky
Mountain National Park and Lumpy Ridge. It was then a long but spectacular
drive north for about 10 hours north via places with great sounding
names such as Fort Collins, Laramie, Cheyenne and Casper before
arriving at Wild Iris. On the way you will drive through the biggest,
flattest prairie bowl you will ever see.
After leaving Wild Iris, we drove south west to Salt Lake City,
Utah and climbed at American Fork and Shelf Road. The drive back
over the Rockies, stopping at Rifle, The Diamond and Eldorado Canyon
finishes the circuit and is about 3000 miles in total and fits nicely
into 4 weeks. With gas at about 1$ a gallon and virtually all camping
free, the cost was very low. The road from Salt Lake City to Rifle
is a huge 5 lane highway that reaches a height of more than 4000m
- higher than most mountains in Europe.
The cost of
a return flight to Denver from the UK is on average £400.
It would also be possible to fly in to Salt Lake City.
If you wanted to get closer to Wild Iris, connections can be made
in Denver for Casper or Cheyenne.
