BMC Youth Climbing Series – Round 1

Saturday 25th was the first round of the YCS at The Foundry. Well done to all who took part and some great results from our regular young foundry climbers.
Jim watkin – BMC Area Youth Coordinator has sent in this short report:

YCS Round 1 25 February

An excellent round for the Academy with nearly all our climbers being placed in the top three of their respective categories:

In Youth D – Abbie Rivett took an excellent first place for the Girls with Pippa Watkin two points behind on the day in third place. Jenny Hunt placed fifth on the day.
In the Boys category Mark Alkins-Tooth won – easily ahead of the rest of the Boys field. Notably however, all three Girls in this category would have finished in the top three of the Boys category as these were climbed over the same routes!!

in Youth C Girls, the performance of the day saw Erin Moore finish second overall after being only one of two climbers to top their final route on the main wall. Erin was in inspired form all day and thoroughly deserved her reward!

In Youth B Girls, Bethany Jennings also put in a great performance and secured a third place on the day for the Academy, holding off the competition to secure her place ‘on the podium’!

Other Foundry Climbers outside of the Academy with places were Poppy Lee in her first comp 1st in Girls Youth E, Dana Windle a creditable 3rd place in Girls Youth C,
Tom Lee winning Boys Youth C, Pareesa Tai finishing 2nd in Girls Youth B, Alex Hall winning Boys Youth B and Jack Shaw winning Boys Youth A

All in all an excellent day for the Academy and for the Foundry in general; on some excellent routes set by Rob. Organisation on the day from Rob, Tom and Karl was also top-notch and all climbers competing went home knowing they’d been given a tough, but enjoyable day. Thanks to all the organisers.

The Foundry Winter Bouldering League – Final Report and Results

Well, it had to end sometime! The final round of The Foundry Winter Bouldering League was awesome. We had another great turnout, and once again, FiveTen rockshoes and Crag X vouchers were given away. The final flash problem prize was a doozy, with around thirteen people flashing problem 11, the £80 prize could only go to one lucky soul…..

Each round this year has been special in one way or another, but I have to say, the final round was by far the most entertaining, and tense. I managed to squeeze in a bit more shaky shaky footage as well as stills:

We had over 140 competitors this year, with the highest attendance approaching 100 people (in round 2). The competition circuit is still up, so if the comps passed you by, you can still try your hand at the competition problems for a wee while yet.

I suppose I should cut to the chase though, and list the winners, and final results:

Some special thankyou’s…

Thanks to our sponsors,

FiveTen (who provided the rockshoe prizes)
The Clinic (who provided the cash prizes)
Crag X Climbing Shop (who let me lean out of their window to get photos)

Thanks to the guys that supplied the new holds at the start of the season, and for working hard to get our holds out on time,

Beta Climbing Designs – (who distribute Bleaustone and Lapis holds)
Core Climbing – (who make great holds, based in Chesterfield)
Planet Holds – (for great mini jugs, and manufacturer of the now infamous ‘ball’)

Finally, thanks to the setters, who actually make the comps what they are:

Rob Napier
Matt Pearson
Dave Mason

There’s been a real atmosphere with The Foundry’s boulder comps this year, and the only thing that remains is to plan for next season’s league. I hope you can all make it to at least one of the comps next season. I promise you’ll enjoy it!

See you soon.
